Preparing Your Yard for the Storm Season

Storms can create a lot of damage to your property; in these situations it is better to be proactive than reactive. A lot of damage from weak tree limbs can be prevented if a tree is properly trimmed and ready for the stormy season. Thinking ahead will not guarantee that your home will be completely safe, but it will help you to avoid the most likely causes of damage.

Worst Time for Storms

June usually marks the starting point for hurricane season across the US. With the recent disaster in Alabama and parts of North Georgia, these storms are no joke. It is estimated that in 2011, at least ten or eleven hurricanes will hit the US. FEMA warns residents to be ready when the storms hit, and warns that by the time a warning is issued, there is no time to begin planning. It is a good idea to have emergency supply kit stored for emergencies. Food, water, medical supplies and local maps can all be helpful if a storm hits your area, but you should also already have an idea as to where the nearest shelter is. Recommendations for how to prepare for a disaster can be found online.

When to Prepare

NOW! After putting together an emergency kit, the next thing on your list should be to prepare your property. A considerable amount of residential storm damage comes from fallen trees and branches. To protect your home and yard from the effects of strong winds, schedule a consultation with a tree specialist and have any obvious branches that seem vulnerable removed.
